Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnobirthing?

The Hypnobirthing Australia™ Positive Birth Program teaches self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to be used for pain relief and focus during labour and childbirth. Click here for more information.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. The subconscious mind influences what we think, how we feel and the choices we make.

It can actually control pain! Anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus through hypnosis.

Will I Be 'out of it' If I Use Hypnobirthing?

No, absolutely not!

With hypnobirthing, in fact virtually all hypnosis, you are actually in a heightened state of awareness, whilst being at the same time totally relaxed.

Does My Partner and/or Birth Companion Attend Classes?

Yes, birthing companions play an integral role in your birthing success!

Your birth companion can be your partner, doula, sister, friend or mother whoever you feel will best support you throughout your pregnancy and birth.

When Should I Attend Classes?

You can begin classes with me at any time, it can be taught as late as 38 weeks, but I recommend the optimal time to begin as being somewhere between 22 and 28 weeks.

This will give you plenty of time to learn, integrate and practice the techniques. Find out more about classes here.

Should I Still Attend the Antenatal Classes?

It is your choice; however The Hypnobirthing Australia™ Positive Birth Program which I offer is a very comprehensive course in natural childbirth education.

I believe hospital classes tend to give mothers the expectation that your birth will be painful and that it could get complicated, and therefore teach you how to cope with and manage pain, providing a lot of information pertaining to interventions and possible medical procedures.

This approach is not in alignment with The Hypnobirthing Australia™ Positive Birth Program, where the premise is that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and relaxed and has developed a positive expectation for a calm, comfortable birth.

We can discuss this further in your class or session, or you can email me directly for more clarification.

Can You Guarantee a Completely Pain-Free Labour & Birth?

The Hypnobirthing Australia™ Positive Birth Program does not promise painless birthing, though many mothers do report having a relatively pain free birth or one that they were able to manage easily!

When fear is eliminated, birthing muscles function uninhibited and birthing can be accomplished in a shorter period and much more easily. Hypnobirthing mothers may still experience sensations such as tightening or pressure; but most describe that they were attuned to their bodies, working with their surges and therefore able to avoid any pain that is often expressed to women as a given in other childbirth preparation methods.

Please remember, the aim of hypnobirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture perfect natural birth (although this is highly achievable!).

It is to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth where you are in control and in a way that most mirrors nature.
